Are you super critical about your work?
I am.
As a self professed perfectionist, sometimes I can get in my own way. Does the same thing happen to you? I don’t mean to, but on occasion I can overthink whatever I’m doing and then get frustrated because I think I’m doing it entirely wrong.
This is also true when it comes to writing. In the writing class that I am currently in each week we have a small writing assignment, nothing big just 500 words. But to a perfectionist, it feels like a weight on my chest. Can I do it? Will it be good? How would you feel knowing you had to do that?
I want to do it right, I really do. But I’ve never done this particular writing technique before that he wants us to try, so how do I know its right? And what makes matters worse is when I look at the date and panic because the deadline is fast approaching. I try to do the best I can and read the suggested stories to get a better understanding of how its done. But I can only read so much and I just have to realize – I’m trying something new. There are two ways this can go down, either they will love it or help me with some constructive feedback to get it where it needs to be. That is the only way for me to truly grow and get out of my comfort zone. Is it extremely uncomfortable, yes. However, its worth it. After all, if I never push myself, then I’d never achieve any of my dreams. And the same goes for you.
Is there something that you’ve always wanted to do, but shied away from it? It’s still the beginning of the year. You have time to take up something new and see if you can become great at it. Don’t let fear prevent you from moving forward. If I let fear get in the way, I NEVER would have signed up for this writing class. And I am learning so much!!
Now let me get off here. I have a scene and a short story to finish.
But go after your dreams! If you feel comfortable, feel free to put some of them down in the comment section below.
And for all you writers out there, keep writing! I’m rooting for you!
